Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway

At the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway, just 25 minutes from Shrewsbury, there are gleaming locomotives hissing with steam. There are also comfortable carriages, heated in cold weather or open balconies where you can stand and watch the rolling hills, rushing rivers, green farmland and grazing sheep and cattle.
It’s a 45-minute ride each way, just right for children. At the Llanfair Caereinion terminus, have lunch or tea with cakes in the friendly tearoom, or set off to explore town and countryside before your return journey. You will find gift shops and helpful staff at both stations. You might be interested in becoming a volunteer yourself.
